"Are You Digging In The Right Mine"?

Finishing Well, Part 2: Are You Digging in the Right Mine?

How do you know when an obstacle means keep going—and when wisdom is telling you it's time to let go?

In this episode of The Kingdom Corner Reading Room, we finish Chapter 9, “Finishing Well,” from Dr. Henry Cloud’s Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality.

Cloud begins with a remarkable story from his own life about the obstacles he faced while trying to establish a psychiatric treatment center. Again and again, the doors seemed to close. Investors disappeared. Hospitals became unavailable. A company entered bankruptcy just weeks before opening. Yet Cloud and his partners kept finding another way.

Eventually, what seemed almost impossible became a successful operation serving 35 cities in four states.

That story raises an important question:

When do we persevere—and when do we stop digging?

Sometimes we're only a few feet from the gold, and the obstacle in front of us requires courage, creativity, patience, and persistence.

But sometimes we're digging in the wrong mine altogether.

That's where perseverance must be joined by wisdom.

Cloud then introduces another surprising characteristic of successful people: they know how to lose well.

Everyone experiences loss. The difference isn't that successful people never lose. It's that they learn from loss rather than repeating it.

Can we sit with failure long enough to understand it?

Can we recognize our own contribution instead of blaming everyone around us?

Can we grieve what has been lost, learn from it, and move forward?

Cloud describes this as metabolizing experience—taking what is useful from what happened and allowing it to become wisdom and character while leaving behind what is useless or toxic.

Or, as I put it:

Eat the chicken and spit out the bones.

And then Cloud takes the idea one step further.

Sometimes finishing well requires letting go not merely of something that failed—but of something that was actually good.

A project.

A business.

A ministry.

An idea.

A teaching.

Something that served us beautifully in another season but is now consuming the time, energy, attention, and resources needed for what comes next.

The good can become the enemy of the best.

So today we're asking three important questions:

How do I know whether an obstacle is calling me to persevere—or wisdom is telling me it's time to let go?

When I experience failure or loss, do I blame, immediately chase the next shiny object, or can I metabolize the experience and grow from it?

What good thing might I need to release in order to make room for something better in this season of my life?

Maybe finishing well isn't about dragging everything we've accumulated across the finish line.

Maybe it's about becoming the kind of person who knows what to carry—and what to leave behind.

Join me in the Reading Room as we finish this powerful chapter of Henry Cloud's Integrity and continue learning what it means not merely to work hard—but to develop the character and wisdom necessary to finish well.
