"Can You See Yourself Clearly?"

In this episode of The Kingdom Corner Reading Room, Matt continues through Dr. Henry Cloud’s Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality and explores what it means to become a person who can see reality clearly—not only in others, but in ourselves.

We can easily view other people through the lens of our past experiences, needs, hurts, and expectations. Cloud challenges us to ask a difficult but important question: “Is this really about them—or is some of this about me?”

We also explore what psychologists call the “observing ego”—the ability to watch ourselves while we are interacting with others, recognize when we're getting off course, and make corrections. Mature character isn't about having no weaknesses; it's about becoming increasingly aware of them and learning to self-correct.

The discussion then turns to the relationship between our emotions and rational thinking. Strong emotions are part of being human, but when they overwhelm our ability to think clearly, they can lead us into decisions we later regret. Matt closes with a very personal childhood story about a Monopoly game, an angry ten-year-old boy, a broken window, and a scar that remains more than sixty years later—a vivid reminder of what can happen when emotion temporarily takes control.

Questions to consider:

  • Can I see myself clearly while I'm interacting with others?
  • Can I recognize when I'm getting off course and correct myself?
  • How comfortable am I discovering something about myself that I don't particularly like?
  • Can I communicate what's happening inside me instead of making others experience it through my behavior?
  • What can I see about myself today that I couldn't—or wouldn't—see a few years ago?
  • When my emotions are inflamed, can I still access good judgment?

The goal isn't merely information, but transformation and formation. The more clearly we can see ourselves, the better equipped we become to meet the demands of reality with wisdom, humility, and integrity.
